Effort to make animal abuse a federal crime getting bipartisan support

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Furry friends all across the country could soon have new protections from the federal government – and lawmakers say it’s about time.

The effort to make animal abuse a federal crime is getting a lot of support on both sides of the aisle. Congressional lawmakers say with all the division in government, there’s nothing that unites people like protecting animals. They’re hoping that’s enough to get a new bill passed into law.

The Prevent Animal Cruelty and Torture Act – or PACT Act – would turn trafficking animals across state lines into a federal crime. It would also be a federal crime to create online animal torture videos.

Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL) and Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) worked together to author the bill. It now has more than 270 co-sponsors from both parties.

“The bill isn’t just one of the most widely-supported pieces of legislation on the hill, it is also one of the most bipartisan,” Rep. Deutch said... Read More

Business owner offers homeless man job paying $15 an hour, when man refuses, tables are turned

BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) – Ryan Bray said it was time to take a stand. He felt bullied and harassed nearly every day as he drove past one particular corner near his home in Bradenton.

The busy intersection at 75th Street West and Manatee Avenue West always posed a big problem for Ryan and others, he told 8 on your Side.

It happened over and over again: People would approach the stoplight, he says, and the bullying would begin.

Homeless men and women can be seen each day, standing at the corner and holding signs, often approaching cars in an aggressive way.

“They threaten violence,” he told us. “I could tell you what they said to me. The Bradenton Police Department heard it. ‘Kill my mother, rape my wife!’  And, that’s the politest things they said.”

Ryan says it happened again on Sunday when a homeless man he had seen many times before walked over to his car... Read More

Texas GOP lawmaker’s tweet escalates tension over guns

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A Texas state representative is being criticized for tweeting he had an assault weapon ready for Democratic president candidate Beto O’Rourke.

The tweet by Republican state Rep. Briscoe Cain came after O’Rourke pledged Thursday during the Democratic debate that “hell yes, we’re gonna take your AR-15, your AK-47” when asked about a mandatory assault weapons buyback proposal he’s endorsed.

Cain tweeted: “My AR is ready for you Robert Francis,” O’Rourke’s full name.

O’Rourke called the tweet “a death threat” underscoring the danger of such weapons. A Twitter spokesman says Cain’s tweet was removed for violating the company’s terms of service.

But it escalated an already tense atmosphere in Texas over guns after two mass shootings in August left 29 people dead.

Cain didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment... Read More
