Wedding cake box in freezer contained mummified remains of newborn

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A St. Louis man says a box that had been in his mother’s freezer for decades contained the mummified remains of a newborn baby, which he discovered while cleaning out her home after she died.

Adam Smith told St. Louis media outlets that he opened the cardboard box Sunday expecting to find something like the top of his mother’s first wedding cake or money because she never had a bank account. Instead, he says he found an infant’s body and a pink blanket.

St. Louis police confirmed that they are investigating a “suspicious death” involving an “unknown infant” found inside the home and that autopsy results were pending. However, police would not answer questions Tuesday beyond an incident summary released Monday. That summary said that police were called to the home just before 1 a.m. on Sunday and did not say where in the home the remains were found... Read More

Gordon Ramsay turns explorer in new travel food show

NEW YORK (AP) — For his latest TV show, famed chef Gordon Ramsay has definitely left the comforting familiarity of his kitchens.

On “Uncharted,” Ramsay visits global destinations to explore flavors far from routine. He eats guinea pig in Peru, fishes for eel with his bare hands to make a Maori dish in New Zealand and forages for hearts of palm in Morocco.

“It’s a million miles away from my high-end, three-star Michelin kitchen,” he says of the show airing on the National Geographic Channel. “It’s straight to the source.”

After spending a week learning about the ingredients, Ramsay ends each hour-long show with a cooking competition, pitting himself against a local chef. Think of it like Anthony Bourdain crossed with Bear Grylls and then add some “Top Chef.”

Ramsay, who is also a host on Fox’s “MasterChef,” told The Associated Press about being a fish out of water for once and how kitchens are changing... Read More

Firefighters warn drivers to check the back seat

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Even one heartbreaking story about kids left in hot cars is one too many.

A father in New York now faces charges after his 1-year-old twins died after being accidentally left in their car seats while their father was at work.

According to the National Safety Council, 24 children have already died in the U.S. this year after being left in a hot car. On average, 38 children die every year. Last year was the worst year for deaths (52) since it started being tracked in 1998.

When you hear those stories, you may wonder how does it happen? How does someone forget a child in the back seat?

Cory Whitlock with Las Vegas Fire & Rescue says this tragedy typically happens when people are in a rush and forgetful. He says there is a campaign called “Check Your Seat in the Heat.” ... Read More
