Fundraiser planned for bonfire victims

Friends of the seven students from Basic High School in Henderson, who were burned when a fuel barrel was put on a bonfire they were near, will host a fundraiser at the school in September.

The students were celebrating the commencement ceremony for the school this past summer when police say 19-year-old Michael Brandon Boyd, Jr. threw a 55-gallon fuel drum on top of a bonfire.

The drum caused the fire to explode and spread. Seven teenagers were burned. Boyd was arrested earlier this week and is facing several charges, including third-degree arson, seven counts of mayhem and several counts of reckless disregard of persons.

The fundraiser will help the victims and their families pay for medical costs. The event will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the school’s gym. It will feature the marching band, chamber singers, orchestra, theater and guitar ensembles, cheerleaders and dance team.
