Henderson Students Collect Hundreds of Shoes for Haiti

HENDERSON, Nev. -- Students at one Henderson school are putting their best foot forward. They are collecting shoes to send to Haiti.

Students in the SAVE program at Elise Wolff Elementary came up with the idea after they saw all the stories on the news. The shoes will be given to Soles for Souls, a group that provides shoes to the needy.

"It'll make them feel good and they probably like to know that other people are worried about them," said fifth grader Cayman Nelson.

State Warns of Census Scams

LAS VEGAS -- State officials are warning Nevadans to be on the look out for scams involving the 2010 Census.

Secretary of State Ross Miller and Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto issued a consumer advisory Wednesday morning.

They say the scams include official looking requests for personal financial information and they may come in the form of a direct mail, email or even someone visiting your home.

"Nevadans must know that the U.S. Census Bureau is seeking only demographic information and would not ask for personal information like social security, bank account of credit card numbers," Masto said.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the census forms will be mailed out to people starting in early March. Workers will begin knocking on the doors of single family households around May 1, 2010 if they didn't get the form mailed back to them.

President Obama Arrives in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS -- President Barack Obama arrived in Southern Nevada at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The visit is his second since becoming president last year and his first since making controversial comments about Las Vegas at a New Hampshire rally. "You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college," the president said at the time.

When President Obama arrived in Las Vegas Thursday evening, he received a warm welcome from state and national leaders including U.S. Reps. Dina Titus and Shelley Berkley. Notably absent was Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, who criticized the president's Las Vegas comments. Goodman wanted a meeting with the president and an apology. So far, he has received neither.
