Zappos Gives Away Shoes to Needy Kids

LAS VEGAS -- Six-hundred kids from different Las Vegas elementary schools are walking around in style after getting a new pair of shoes Monday.

It may not seem like a lot, but for some, this is their first brand new pair of shoes.

Zappos teamed up with the West Coast Basketball Conference that's holding it's tournament in Las Vegas this week.

Buses full of students lined up outside the Orleans Arena for a field trip like no other. From the cheers the minute they stepped off the bus to music from college bands from the West Coast Conference, it was a special day.

"We call them our At Hope Kids -- kids that kind of deserve a little extra break," said Jackie Locks with the After School All Stars.

These are the After School All Stars -- kids who come from at risk schools -- like fourth grader Estefania Jimenez, who was among the hundreds to get a new pair of shoes.

A lot of these kids don't know their shoe size since many get hand-me-downs from older brothers and sisters.

Estefania was paired with a Zappos volunteer to start the search for her perfect pair of shoes.

"I was looking at different type of shoes and I got to pick what type I wanted," she said.

And that' s a big part of this give away -- giving these students the chance to choose any shoe they want.

"It wouldn't be enough if we said, 'Here's a shoe, go walk away.' What we really want to do is make sure they have a choice and there's a selection to make sure they have a size that fits," said Aaron Magness with Zappos.

And for Estefania, she started off wanting black shoes, but girls will be girls and ended up with something totally different -- pink Converse.

The fun didn't stop after getting their shoes. The students were also able to watch the West Coast Conference women's championship game between Gonzaga and Pepperdine.
