Gov. Sisolak declares state of emergency in response to Pinehaven Fire; homes destroyed, hundreds evacuated

RENO, Nev. (KLAS) -- Gov. Steve Sisolak has declared a state of emergency as the Pinehaven Fire continues to burn in Reno. This follows other declarations issued by the City of Reno and Washoe County.

"I want to thank all the first responders, local government agencies and nonprofit entities who have already stepped up to assist the community during this emergency event," said Sisolak in a news release. "This truly reflects Nevada’s Battle Born spirit and our commitment to caring for one another in times of need."

The emergency declaration will allow local, state and federal resources to assist.

According to the Associated Press, the fire has destroyed several homes and forced hundreds to evacuate. Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochran did not know the exact number of home losses.

The blaze is threatening hundreds of other structures in the Caughlin Ranch area. Reno Fire Department officials earlier warned residents to prepare for evacuations, and the Reno Police Department assisted in the evacuations.

Reno FD said there is no estimate as to when residents will be allowed back to the area.

In a media briefing Tuesday night, Cochran said the fire has grown from 1,000 to 1,500 acres. He says he believes it originated in the area of Pinehaven Court. It was reported just after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve signed an Emergency Declaration for the fire. On Twitter, she urged people to stay out of the area and to not spectate so fire crews can access the flames.
