Family plans memorial for boy, 8, who drowned at Cowabunga Bay

The family of the 8-year-old boy who died after drowning in Cowabunga Bay's wave pool is spending this Monday making funeral arrangements.

Ddaquan Bankston's uncle says the boy was a goofy, bright child and a voracious reader. As a 2nd grader, Daquan was reading at a 4th and 5th grade level at Kit Carson Elementary School.

Instead of enjoying the summer with Daquan before he enters 3rd grade, his family is making arrangements for his memorial. Daquan was rushed to the hospital from Cowabunga Bay's wave pool on June 18 and died Friday night at Sunrise Hospital after five days on life support.

An investigation into the drowning is ongoing, but Daquan's family wants to know more about the moments leading up to Daquan being swept under water. They tell 8 News NOW, that he spent an extensive amount of time under water, but had no major trauma or signs of hitting his head.

Witnesses have told the family that three or four lifeguards were on duty around the wave pool at the time of the incident. The Southern Nevada Health District has said that eight lifeguards were on duty at Cowabunga Bay.

"We're looking to see what exactly happened that day. What was their response? Was it a slow response? Was there not enough staff? What happened in that moment? Jerome Burks, Daquan Bankston's uncle said.

After Daquan's death, Cowabunga Bay released the following statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Our utmost concern is the safety and enjoyment of all our guests. the circumstances of this tragic incident are being investigated and we will have further comment upon completion of the investigation."

Burks says the family has hired an attorney, but their focus now is planning the boy's memorial and viewing which are open to the public.

The visitation and memorial will be held at Bread of Life Ministries of his Glory at 2721 West Coran Lane in Las Vegas.

The wake will be held July 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. and the memorial will follow the next day on July 8 at 11 a.m. A GoFundMe account has been set up to pay for expenses.
