Henderson seeks entries for WinterFest

The holiday season is just around the corner and the city of Henderson is getting ready for its annual holiday celebration WinterFest.

The city is looking for entries for its evening light parade, Festival of Trees and gingerbread house competition.

The theme of this year’s celebration is It’s a Fairy Tale Christmas. The festival is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11 through Saturday, Dec. 13. at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 Water Street.

The Festival of Trees will be limited to the first 12 applications. The evening light parade has three categories and prizes will be given to the top three entries for each category. The gingerbread houses must be 90 percent edible and made of gingerbread, icing and candies.

Henderson, military moms' group organizing troop gifts for holidays

The city of Henderson is working with the Blue Star Mothers of Henderson and Boulder City to put together holiday stockings for troops deployed overseas.

The Blue Star Mothers will be collecting supplies, including non-perishable food items, lip balm, magazines and personal care items to package and send to troops for the holidays.

This year the Mothers are looking to stuff 1,000 stockings with the comforts of home. Collection boxes will be set up at the Henderson City Hall, city recreation centers and at businesses along Water Street District.

Besides gathering items to give to service members, the group is also looking for information about Henderson residents who are deployed. Family and friends can submit contact information at cityofhenderson.com, so service members can get their very own stocking.


Fundraiser planned for bonfire victims

Friends of the seven students from Basic High School in Henderson, who were burned when a fuel barrel was put on a bonfire they were near, will host a fundraiser at the school in September.

The students were celebrating the commencement ceremony for the school this past summer when police say 19-year-old Michael Brandon Boyd, Jr. threw a 55-gallon fuel drum on top of a bonfire.

The drum caused the fire to explode and spread. Seven teenagers were burned. Boyd was arrested earlier this week and is facing several charges, including third-degree arson, seven counts of mayhem and several counts of reckless disregard of persons.

The fundraiser will help the victims and their families pay for medical costs. The event will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the school’s gym. It will feature the marching band, chamber singers, orchestra, theater and guitar ensembles, cheerleaders and dance team.

St. Patrick's Day Festivities Announced

The city of Henderson has announced the dates for its annual St. Patrick's Day festivities.

This year the Southern Nevada Sons & Daughters of Erin St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival will start Thursday, March 13 and go through Sunday, March 16 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 Water Street.

This is the 48th annual festival and the 10th year of the Sons & Daughters of Erin hosting the event in Henderson.

The festival will feature a carnival, car show, live Irish music and dance and traditional Irish cuisine.

The parade will be at 10 a.m. March 15. It is one of the largest St. Patrick's Day parades in the state. This year's theme will be Shamrocks and Shenanigans. The organizers are accepting applications for the parade through Wednesday, Feb. 12. The entrance fee is $50.

WinterFest Starts Thursday in Henderson

The city of Henderson's big holiday celebration kicks off Thursday at the historic Water Street district.

WinterFest begins with a special concert by the Henderson Symphony Orchestra at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Henderson Convention Center.

The concert is just one of several live entertainment options during the three-day event.

Friday's big event will be the Henderson tree lighting ceremony and celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Henderson Events Plaza. The tree will be lit by Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, the celebration starts at noon and culminates with the WinterFest Evening Light Parade starting at 5 p.m. Saturday. Floats covered in colorful holiday lights will glide through the historic Water Street district.

The festivities will include horse-drawn carriage rides, carolers, holiday crafts, a gingerbread house display and, of course, Santa Claus.

City Hall at the Mall Event Saturday

The city of Henderson will be hosting its annual City Hall at the Mall this Saturday at the Galleria at Sunset.

The event is an informational fair featuring city departments. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public will be able to visit the fair to talk with representatives from city departments to talk about available services, programs and projects. People are encouraged to give feedback about city issues that they feel need to be addressed.

There will also be a special presentation of the five winning essays from the "If I Were the Mayor of Henderson" 5th grade student essay contest. The presentation will start at 3 p.m. in the upper level food court.

Holiday Lights Return to the Cactus Garden

A southern Nevada holiday tradition returns for its 20th year Tuesday.

Once again, the Ethel M Chocolates' Factory will light up its Cactus Garden for the holiday season.

The celebration will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with the lighting ceremony set for about 6:10 p.m. The celebration will include live music, local officials, comedian George Wallace and a visit from Santa Claus. Tickets to the event are available at the factory.

The garden is free and open to the public starting Wednesday and will be open through January 1.

Every year the garden, which is situated behind the Ethel M Chocolates' Factory, is fitted with half a million lights over three acres. There is also live entertainment Fridays and Saturdays. Santa pictures are available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
