Henderson Seeking Entries for WinterFest Parade

The city of Henderson is looking for entries for this year's WinterFest Evening Light Parade.

The parade is part of the city's annual holiday celebration. The parade will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, December 14 in Henderson's Water Street District.

Floats must be illuminated and reflect this year's theme: An Old-Fashioned Christmas Delight. Cash prizes will be awarded for top three floats. Entries will be judged in three categories: incorporation of lights, creativity and overall appeal.

The registration deadline is Wednesday, November 27. Applications are available online at hendersonlive.com.

Southern Nevada Strong Holding Open Houses

Clark County officials want to hear what people think about how to improve life in the Las Vegas valley.

The regional planning initiative known as Southern Nevada Strong aims to better join together transportation, housing and job opportunities throughout southern Nevada.

To reach that goal, the group is holding a series of open houses throughout August and September. The events will feature a brief presentation from Southern Nevada Strong. Residents will then be given a chance to review the priorities and rank what areas they think to be addressed.

The first open house is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sahara West Library, 9600 West Sahara Avenue.

City Fourth of July Party at Mission Hills Park

The City of Henderson will host its official Fourth of July party deep into the city.

The city celebration will take place from 6-9 p.m. at Mission Hills Park, 551 E. Mission Dr., near the U.S. 95 and College Drive exit. The event will feature an 18-minute fireworks show by Lantis Fireworks and Lasers, which begins at 9 p.m. Admission is free, but some activities could require a fee.

New this year will be 3-on-3 women’s and 6-on-6 co-rec volleyball tournaments played on grass, three-legged races and a water bucket brigade. Signup for these tournaments begins at 5:30 p.m.

Activities for children include face-painting, sand art, bounce houses, and cooling off in the park’s splash pad.

City of Henderson Awarded for Arbor Day Program

The City of Henderson is getting a Gold Leaf Award for its efforts to improve green space in the city.

The Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture presented the award to the city for its Therapeutic Recreation Arbor Day program. Through the program, special needs residents helped plant 25 trees at three community centers.

The Gold Leaf Award is given out to communities, agencies, nonprofits or neighborhood groups that conduct outstanding Arbor Day activities.

The group was established in 1934 and is made up of thousands of professionals in the western United States practicing arboriculture.

Veterans Needed as Treatment Program Mentors

 

Calling all veterans: the city of Henderson needs your help to work with your peers.

The Henderson Municipal Court is seeking volunteer veterans to serve as mentors for defendants enrolled in Veterans Treatment Court. Mentors help coach and guide veterans through the court treatment program.

Veterans Treatment Court is an alternative sentencing program for military veterans charged with misdemeanor crimes while struggling to readjust to civilian life. Many wrestle with substance abuse and mental illness that appear to be related to military service. Veterans Treatment Court focuses on the veteran’s underlying issues and provides access to resources that enable successful compliance with the court’s orders.

Grand Marshals for Heritage Parade Unveiled

 

As the city of Henderson readies to honor its 60th anniversary, officials named five people with ties to the city’s history as grand marshals for its upcoming Heritage Parade.

The choices range from one of the town’s first beauty queens, a family of lifelong teachers and a former Henderson fire chief, among others. The grand marshals will lead the parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6.

The city of Henderson hosts the 47th annual Southern Nevada Sons of Erin St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival this weekend, with activities beginning Thursday.
