Senior Center Program Earns National Honor

Senior Center Program Earns National Honor

A program designed to let seniors help seniors recently received national recognition for its work.

Henderson’s Heritage Park Senior Facility docent greeter program won honors from The National Council on Aging (NCOA) through its National Institute of Senior Centers 2012 Programs of Excellence Awards.

The docent greeter program earned an honorable mention in the leadership, civic engagement and community development category. The awards are designed “to honor and promote outstanding efforts made by senior centers throughout the nation to offer innovative, creative and replicable programs for older adults.”

Heritage Park Senior Facility’s all-volunteer docent greeter program provides first-time visitors with a personal welcome and facility tour, and assists with program registration. Since its creation in April 2011, the docent greeter program has logged 1,413 facility tours and more than 2,144 volunteer hours.

Signing Wall Set Up to Thank Veterans

A southern Nevada casino is giving people a chance to say 'thank you' to the veterans who sacrificed so much for our country.

Fiesta Henderson has put up a signing wall just outside its Festival Buffet on the second floor to allow people to sign and thank veterans. The special banner will be presented to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3848 Monday, which is the day after Veterans Day.

VFW Post 3848 is just down the street from Fiesta Henderson.

Donations of frozen turkeys and fixings also will be accepted from November 15 to 17 at three Albertsons locations:

  • 575 College Drive (Thursday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • 9725 S. Maryland Parkway (Friday, Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • 1650 N. Buffalo Drive (Saturday, Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
