The Henderson Police Department’s Traffic Unit officers issued 63 tickets to drivers for failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks during the recent effort targeting pedestrian safety.

Henderson Traffic officers were joined by officers from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, Mesquite Police, Boulder City Police and Nevada Highway Patrol for speed enforcement and handed out 219 speeding tickets during the speeding enforcement part of the effort from April 8 through May 9. The officers also issued 28 citations for no insurance and 15 citations for seat belt violations.

The enforcement effort on pedestrian safety was extremely important as there have been nine pedestrian fatalities statewide so far this year and 434 pedestrian fatalities statewide from 2000 to 2007.

The Henderson Police Traffic Unit received funding from the Department of Public Safety - Office of Traffic Safety, as part of the Joining Forces Grant. The grant provides funding for enforcement and education to reduce deaths and injuries on Nevada roadways. The grant will assist in funding special enforcement details throughout the year targeting seat belt usage, DUIs, pedestrian safety and speeding violations.
