Registration Open for Heritage Parade

 

Registration is open now for the city of Henderson’s Heritage Parade.

The parade is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6 in Henderson’s historic Water Street district. It is part of the Heritage Parade and Festival, which celebrates the city’s incorporation in 1953.

This year’s theme is Diamond Anniversary – Celebrating 60 Years. All entries will be judged on how well they incorporate the theme along with creativity and overall appeal. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place floats. There will also be a prize for the float voted as the best by people watching the parade.

Henderson Police Plan Saturation Patrols for Super Bowl

 

Henderson Police will join up with other local law enforcement to employ saturation patrols to catch drunk drivers on Super Bowl Sunday.

Last year, there were three fatal accidents in Nevada during Super Bowl weekend, including one on Super Bowl Sunday. The fatal accident on Super Bowl Sunday occurred in Lander County; the other two took place in Clark County with one of those being a DUI-related crash.

Alcohol factored in 42 of Nevada’s 258 roadway deaths in 2012, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety – Office of Traffic Safety.

The Henderson Police Traffic Unit received funding from the Department of Public Safety - Office of Traffic Safety, as part of the Joining Forces Grant.

United Way of Southern Nevada will host two major tax prep assistance events over the next couple of months.

The organization recently kicked off its season of tax help, including Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites that will open starting Monday.

Households with an income of less than $51,000 in 2012 can receive free tax preparation and may be eligible for an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) refund of up to $5,891.

In addition to more than 30 VITA sites across the Las Vegas valley that will be open January 28 through April 15, United Way is organizing two large tax preparation days:

Henderson Announces Plans for St. Patrick's Day Festival

 

Plans are now out for one of the largest St. Patrick's Day celebrations in the country.

The city of Henderson announced its plans for the 47th annual Southern Nevada Sons of Erin St. Patrick's Day Parade and Festival.

The festival will be Thursday, March 14 through Sunday, March 17 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 South Water Street.

The events include a carnival, car show, live entertainment and traditional food and drink. Right now, the Southern Nevada Sons of Erin is accepting entries for the St. Patrick's Day parade. The parade will be Saturday, March 16.

This year's theme is The Harp & The Shamrock. The cost to enter is $50 and is limited to the first 100 entries. Parade applications are due February 12. Past parades have included festive floats and Celtic dancers.

Volunteers Needed for Homeless Census

Volunteers Needed for Homeless Census

 

County and charity officials are asking for community help Thursday in conducting a census of the valley’s homeless population.

Volunteers are needed to help with the Southern Nevada Homeless Census urban count in from 1 to 6 a.m. Thursday.

Any person or group interested in volunteering is asked to pre-register through the United Way of Southern Nevada at http://bit.ly/2013HomelessCensus. Once signed up, volunteers will be assigned to teams and deployment centers.

The teams will count the homeless population in designated areas without interacting with or disturbing the homeless at that early hour.

Polar Bear Plunge Challenges Your Idea of Cold

 

If the past couple of weeks haven’t been cold enough for you, an upcoming City of Henderson event might take care of that.

People are invited to brave the freezing water of the Henderson Multigenerational Activity Pool, 250 S. Green Valley Pkwy., for Henderson’s second annual Polar Bear Plunge. The event takes place from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9. Participants will ride down the slides of the outdoor activity pool and plunge into the cold water below.

The event also includes warm winter treats, activities and a bounce house. Admission is $5 per person, including those wishing to watch. Swimmers will take the plunge by age:
