Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen announced Thursday the city is close to sealing a deal to develop a 20,000-square-foot sports complex south of the M Resort.
Hafen made the announcement during his State of the City address. He says the complex could create 10,000 new jobs, but reports have indicated the project could be years away from beginning based on a number of factors including the need to acquire land from the federal government.
“Phase one of the project is scheduled to include a 20,000-seat stadium that would house soccer as well as other events, an arena for basketball, hockey and other sports and entertainment activity,” Hafen said.
The mayor also highlighted the $1 million expansion of St. Rose Hospital.
“The expansion will include 100 new beds and will double the size of their emergency room with construction to begin in the next few months,” Hafen said.
Construction on that project is set to begin in the next few months. There are also plans to break ground on a new 21-acre water park near the Galleria at Sunset. The ground breaking will be this summer. Plus, the Levi Strauss Jean Corporation is also planning to expand its Henderson offices. That will be a $28 million project. Hafen says all of these developments will bring much-needed jobs to Henderson.
“You know, I haven't stopped to tally up the jobs or expansions but we're looking at 12 to 15,000 jobs just with the Union Village and the sports complex,” Hafen said.
