HENDERSON, Nev. -- Officers arrested nine drivers on DUI charges during a big enforcement effort which targeted impaired drivers.

Over a three week period, which ended on Jan. 5, Henderson Police officers, along with the Metro and Mesquite Police agencies used “saturation patrols” to search the area for drunk drivers. Officers also issued 61 tickets to drivers who were speeding, HPD said.

There were seven citations given out to drivers who ran red lights, and a number of tickets were given to drivers who didn't have insurance, drove on a revoked, suspended or expired driver's license, or drivers that didn't have the right vehicle registration.

Last year, 285 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes on Nevada roadways. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 74 of those deaths, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety – Office of Traffic Safety.

Clark County had 45 of the 74 alcohol-related traffic crash deaths in 2014 with a total of 170 of the 285 traffic fatalities. There were 13 traffic-related deaths in Henderson in 2014.

In 2012, there were 10,322 drunken driving fatalities in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These alcohol-impaired driving fatalities accounted for 31 percent of the total motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the country.
