The City of Henderson plans some hikes specifically for children going to school at home.

Homeschoolers are invited to join the Parks and Recreation Department for two educational hikes this fall. The hikes are open to children from 5 to 10 years old, accompanied by a parent or guardian. Although participation is free, registration is required and can be made at any City of Henderson recreation center or online at cityofhenderson.com (activity 644016.)

Each hike is held on a different Henderson trail and includes an outdoor learning opportunity. Children and parents should dress for the weather and bring water.

A River Mountains Loop Trail and Animal Tracks hike is set for 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. Participants will meet at Equestrian Trailhead, 1200 Equestrian Dr., before heading out on the hike. Children will experience the River Mountains Loop Trail and learn about the many different animals that live nearby.

A Saguaro/Downs 5 Trail hike is planned for 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 18. Participants will meet at Saguaro Park, 600 Pounds Way, before exploring the Downs 5 Linear Trail. Children will also learn about the wide variety of trails located near their neighborhoods.

“Our Homeschooler Hikes program balances the educational and physical fitness needs of homeschooled children in our community,” said Jennifer Magby, Outdoor Recreation coordinator, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. “These are enjoyable, easy hikes that blend outdoor recreation with education. It’s a nice way to introduce children to our many trails.”
