Eastside Cannery "Lights It Up Blue" for Autism Awareness

The iconic Eastside Cannery building will attract even more attention on April 1st and 2nd, especially during the nighttime hours.  That's because the structure will be illuminated in blue. "Light It Up Blue" is a nationwide effort to encourage businesses and residences to light up their structures in blue light in recognition of those families affected by autism.  The Eastside Cannery, on Boulder Highway is able to change the colors displayed on the building quite easily.  There are roughly 16,000 LED lights on the exterior of the building which can be programmed to change colors or illuminate one particular shade of color.  The blue lights will be visual Friday, April 1st and Saturday April 2nd, which is World Autism Awareness Day.  Every 1 in 110 children is affected by the autism disorder.  More information on Light It Up Blue can be found at www.lightitupblue.org and www.autismspeaks.org.

The preserve is located on the eastern portion of the Pacific Migratory Flyway and serves as a welcome rest stop for many birds migrating through.

International Migratory Bird Day draws attention to the journey more than 350 species of birds take between their summer and winter homes.

Groundbreaking Set for Thursday on Wells Park Improvements

Groundbreaking Set for Thursday on Wells Park Improvements

A groundbreaking for improvements at Wells Park in Henderson will take place Thursday afternoon.

The park improvements are the result of several public feedback opportunities where residents shared their preference that their existing park be modernized and receive additional amenities instead of adding a new park. The $1.8 million improvement project to the 10-acre neighborhood park is moving forward through funding from the City of Henderson's Redevelopment Agency.

In addition to the traditional turning of dirt, students from neighboring Edna F. Hinman Elementary School will make a brief presentation about the history of the area and will sing a couple of songs.

The new Wells Park will have a more urban design style that provides creative ways to play with features such as a life-size chess board.
