Henderson Police will be stepping up efforts to protect shoppers during the busy holiday shopping season.

Starting Friday, the department will increase patrols in areas where people will be shopping. Officers will be in uniform looking out for citizens and in plain clothes looking for thieves who prey on busy shoppers.

“Every year someone becomes the victim of a criminal stealing newly purchased presents,” Henderson Police Chief Patrick Moers said. “This year we will have more Henderson Police officers around the areas where people are shopping.”

Officers are reminding people to do their part to protect themselves and their property.

Here are some tips to protect yourself while holiday shopping:

  • Do not buy more than you can carry.
  • Only shop online with companies you know and trust
  • Save receipts to compare with bank and credit card statements
  • Wait until asked to take out a credit card so a thief cannot look over your shoulder for your card number
  • Carry purses close to your body
  • Put wallets in an inside pocket or front trouser pocket
  • Do not leave packages or bags where they can  be seen through car windows, lock them in the trunk
  • Have your keys in your hand when you go out to your car
