Ski Resort Hosts Relay Runners Friday Morning

The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort is hosting the start of a popular relay race starting Friday.

The Ragnar Relay Las Vegas starts at 6 a.m. at the ski resort in Lee Canyon on Mount Charleston. Before the race, the resort will host a breakfast at 5 a.m. and after the staggered start their will be a barbecue at 11 a.m.

The relay is unique because runners work in teams of six to 12 people and run for 12 hours over 200 miles. Each runner takes at three legs during the race. This weekend's race route will take runners from Lee Canyon to Lake Las Vegas in Henderson.

Cycling Event to Slow Traffic Near Lake Mead

A massive cycling event will slow traffic in the Lake Mead area on Saturday morning.

Visitors should expect delays on park roads from 6 a.m. until 11 a.m. because of the RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo Pinarello bicycle event.

As many as 2,000 cyclists will travel along Lake Mead Parkway in Henderson, where they will enter the park and turn onto Lakeshore Road. Cyclists will exit the park at U.S. Highway 93 and head toward Hoover Dam.

A new park deep in southeast Henderson celebrates its grand opening on September 22.

Mayor Andy Hafen, members of the City Council and the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will be at the celebration for Heritage Park, 350 S. Racetrack Road, beginning at 10 a.m.

The park is located on Racetrack Road between Burkholder Boulevard and Newport Drive. In addition to a ribbon cutting, the event will feature activities for children, refreshments, and tours of the park. A previous phase of the park’s 160-acre campus included completion of the LEED Gold-certified Heritage Park Aquatic Complex and Heritage Park Senior Facility, as well as the Bark Park dog park.

Construction on Cornerstone Park Under Way

Construction has started on a new 100-acre park in Henderson.

Cornerstone Park will be near Stephanie Street and Wigwam Road. The new park will have several recreational features, including a 25-acre lake. There will also be picnic and pavilion areas that people will be able to reserve.

Volleyball courts and basketball courts will be built at the park. The park will feature paved and soft-surface trails that will connect to the City of Henderson trail system through the Union Pacific Railroad Trail and the Pittman Wash Trail.

The park is expected to be finished October 6. The project is expected to cost more than $16 million which is coming from the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act.

The lake at the center of the park will not be available for swimming or fishing. The lake is left over from gravel mining activities in the area and is fed by storm drainage and groundwater.

Fall Youth Soccer Registration About to Start

It’s not too early to get the kids registered for fall soccer leagues in Henderson.

Registration is open through Aug. 15 for the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department’s youth soccer league. Divisions include co-rec, boys, girls and VIP.

Olympic Synchronized Swimming Duet to Perform in Henderson

Olympic Synchronized Swimming Duet to Perform in Henderson

The U.S. Olympic synchronized swimming pair will show off their Olympic routines during two exhibitions at Heritage Park Aquatic Complex in Henderson.

The first performance will feature Mary Killman and Mariya Koroleva’s technical routine. It will be at 3 p.m. Friday, July 13. The second performance will feature the pair’s free routine. It will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 14. This will be the duet’s last performance in the United States before heading to the Olympic Games in London.

The exhibition will be part of the U.S. Open Synchronized Swimming National Championships. Tickets for the performances are available at the door. They are $1 for children 2 to 17 years old and seniors, and $2 for adults. 

Killman and Koroleva will compete in London August 5 through 7 at London’s Olympic Park Aquatics Centre. The team has already won a silver medal in the 2011 Pan American Games.

Camp Foxtail is located in the cool in the cool Spring Mountain Range, just 45 minutes from Las Vegas.
