Bowling Championship Event Comes to Henderson

A large sports competition hits Henderson later in August and will start its weekend with a kickoff event in Green Valley.

Henderson will host the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) World Championships from August 16-30. Its opening celebration will take place on August 16 at the Henderson Pavilion, and is free and open to the public. The event begins at 8 p.m.

The 2013 WTBA World Championships will occur at the Strike Zone Bowling Center inside Sunset Station Hotel & Casino. Admission to the tournament is $10 daily or $75 for the two-week event.

In 2011, Henderson was chosen over Abu Dhabi and Munich, Germany to host the WTBA World Championships.

WASHINGTON — Washington Nationals left fielder Bryce Harper is the youngest major leaguer to homer twice in his team’s opening game of a season, delivering solo shots in his first two at-bats Monday.

Henderson Police will join up with other local law enforcement to employ saturation patrols to catch drunk drivers on Super Bowl Sunday.

Last year, there were three fatal accidents in Nevada during Super Bowl weekend, including one on Super Bowl Sunday. The fatal accident on Super Bowl Sunday occurred in Lander County; the other two took place in Clark County with one of those being a DUI-related crash.

Alcohol factored in 42 of Nevada’s 258 roadway deaths in 2012, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety – Office of Traffic Safety.

The Henderson Police Traffic Unit received funding from the Department of Public Safety - Office of Traffic Safety, as part of the Joining Forces Grant.

Fifth-Grade Gymnast to Compete in National Competition

Isabella Fimbres, a student at J. Marlan Walker International School, competed at the Judges Cup in Las Vegas in November against the best level 7 gymnasts in the state.

She earned her spot on the Nevada State Team that will compete in Indianapolis on Jan. 7, 2012, at the "National Judges Cup Championships."

All 50 states send their finest to compete at a national level. The Nevada State Team consists of six girls and two alternates. At the age of 10, Isabella is the youngest gymnast.

A sweep from Down Under highlighted Sunday’s triathlon in Henderson.

The City of Henderson hosted the Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3 for the first time, with approximately 1,700 athletes from across the globe competing. Top professionals Craig Alexander and Melissa Rollison - both from Australia - celebrated victories, crossing the finish line at the Henderson Pavilion in 3:54:48 and 4:30:55, respectively.

With the win, Alexander captured his second World Championship 70.3, while Rollison marked her first, just one year after entering her first 70.3 distance race. The top five professional men’s and women’s results from the Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3 follow:

Tickets for Las Vegas Locos Football On Sale Thursday

Single-game tickets for the two-time defending United Football League (UFL) champion Las Vegas Locomotives will be available starting Thursday for all home games. To purchase single game tickets, fans should call 739-FANS (3267.)  Season and group tickets are also available at 877-LOCO (5626.)

The Locos will play three home games at Sam Boyd Stadium during their 2011 season. The team opens its home schedule on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. against the Omaha Nighthawks. Their next home game will be their second clash of the season with the Sacramento Mountain Lions on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.. The Locos will then close out the regular season with their final home game in a battle against the Virginia Destroyers on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.
