Getting a Jump on the New Cell Phone Law

Getting a Jump on the New Cell Phone Law

Henderson Police today announced they will get a head start on the new state law governing cell phone use while driving.

Department officers will no longer use handheld cell phones and text while driving on duty except in emergencies.

Although a new law banning the use of handheld cell phones provides an exemption for police officers on duty to use handheld cell phones, Chief Jutta Chambers said she wants Henderson to lead by example.

The new department policy mirrors the state law banning the use of handheld devices. Chief Chambers signed the new policy which goes into effect today, two months before the new state law. The new law banning the use of handheld cell phones or other handheld devices to talk, type or read will start on Oct. 1 with police officers issuing warnings. Starting Jan. 1, officers will start issuing tickets.

Motorcycle Crash Kills Man

A 50-year-old man has died after the off-road motorcycle he was riding crashed on a city street in Henderson.

Witnesses say the man was driving the motorcycle at a high rate of speed at about 6:40 p.m. Sunday when he lost control and hit a curb and light pole. Henderson police say the man was ejected from the motorcycle. He was not wearing a helmet and later died from his injuries.

Authorities say speed was likely a factor in the crash. They are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role.

The victim's name has not yet been released.

Henderson police say the incident marks the fifth traffic fatality this year.

The city says it will save money by closing the entire road and performing all of the work in one weekend.

Henderson Man Attempts to Bribe DMV Employee

Henderson Man Attempts to Bribe DMV Employee

A Henderson man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly offering a bribe to a DMV employee to reinstate his driver license and change the date of birth listed on it.

Investigators say William Michael Daugherty also tried to help three underage girls alter their licenses for the purpose of purchasing alcohol.

On May 12, Daugherty, 19, passed a handwritten note to a DMV technician at the office on Sahara Ave. that said, “you wanna make money call me,” and listed a telephone number.

Notified by the employee, the DMV’s Compliance Enforcement Division pursued the case and requested assistance from the Department of Public Safety – Investigation Division to arrange for an undercover officer to contact the suspect. An officer from the DPS – Investigation Division posed as a DMV supervisor and negotiated with Daugherty through several phone calls and a meeting near the suspect’s home.
