Father of Teen Accused of Fatal DUI Accident Speaks Out

LAS VEGAS - The father of the 19-year-old who is accused of driving drunk and killing two people is speaking out for the first time since the accident.

Henderson Police say on Tuesday Anita Mann crashed into a Hyundai SUV at Horizon Ridge Parkway and Shaded Canyon Drive, causing the Hyundai to roll over. The couple inside, 65-year-old Louis Madden and 65-year-old Karen Hicks, died at the scene. Authorities say Mann's blood-alcohol level was .26. That is three times the legal limit.

Her father is now defending his daughter's reputation. He says she's a top-notch college student and National Guard reservist who stays out of trouble. "She's not a partier," Mercury Mann said. "She doesn't go out or hang with a lot of people… She's constantly at home studying for her college classes and exams. Our hearts and prayers go out to (the families of the victims). We are just very, very sorry and don't know what else to say or do at this time."

According to the arrest report, Mann told police after the accident that she was drunk and should be taken to jail.

Neighbors of both Mann and the victims reacted to Tuesday's accident. "Kids shouldn't be drinking, specifically a 19-year-old in the middle of the day," said Holly Pitney, a neighbor of one of the victims. "Something like that shouldn't be happening." "I feel very bad for both families," said Mann's neighbor Diana Peterson. "It's a tragedy and a horrible thing to have to happen."

Mann's father says both he and his daughter are still in shock, and he says he is on a mission to find out how the tragedy could have happened. "I don't know where she was yesterday morning," Mercury Mann said. "(If) she was drinking, I want to know who provided that alcohol to her, and we are pursuing that."

Anita Mann faces two counts of felony DUI causing death.
