Nearly six decades of Henderson will be celebrated next month in the city’s downtown district with a parade and festival.

The city’s 59th anniversary will be honored during the Heritage Parade & Festival. The tribute, which features traditions like breakfast with the city council, a parade, live entertainment and a classic car show, will be held from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday, April 21 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, in the Water Street District. Admission is free.

Below is a schedule of events for the Heritage Parade & Festival. All activities, times, locations are subject to change.

Water Street District

One of the oldest traditions in Henderson, the parade will feature a procession of unique entries, from floats to youth groups, hometown businesses and automobiles. Each will be decorated to the theme, “Magnesium to Magnificent,” a play on Henderson’s history, from its beginnings as small industrial town supplying magnesium to the U.S. Water Department during World War II to its official incorporation in 1953 and as it stands today.

All parade entries will be judged based on three categories: Incorporation of Theme, Creativity and Overall Appeal. Cash prizes will be awarded to floats for 1st ($1,000), 2nd ($750) and 3rd ($500) place, as well as $500 for the People’s Choice Award, which will be voted on by the public, via text message. All other categories will receive ribbons. Parade applications are available at HendersonLive.com.

Heritage Festival

11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Henderson Events Plaza

Following the parade, families will have the opportunity to travel around the globe, experiencing a variety of world cultures, representing such continents as Europe, South America, Asia and more, all courtesy of the International Food & Folklife Association.

While attending the festival, they will have the chance to taste a variety of cuisine, indigenous to a specific country, including delicacies from such countries as Romania, Peru and Malaysia, as well as enjoy a mixture of diverse entertainment, from belly dancing to martial arts. Other activities include craft demonstrations, food exhibitions and international games.

Heritage Classic Car Show

12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

The classic car show will showcase a few hundred hot rods, chronicling the vintage appeal of decades-gone-by. Fans will see many vehicles on display, including some from such big-time automakers as Dodge, Chevrolet, Ford, Plymouth and more. Trophies and awards will be given to car show participants in several different categories.
