A new senior center and low-cost apartment complex makes its debut at the end of March.

The City of Henderson and Nevada H.A.N.D., Inc. will host a grand opening celebration for the Downtown Senior Center and Pacific Pines 4 Senior Apartments at 9:30 a.m. March 29, at 27 E. Texas Ave. in the Water Street District.

Pacific Pines 4 Senior Apartments is an affordable senior housing community that incorporates many sustainable and green building features such as photovoltaic solar energy, LED exterior lighting, high efficiency heating and cooling equipment, solar hot water panels, and high efficiency condensing boilers. The complex features 62 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The property is already fully occupied.

The new 6,000-square-foot Downtown Senior Center will offer an opportunity for visitors to learn about amenities and programs available to seniors. Amenities and services include a fitness room, wellness area, and nutrition program.

“Since this is a senior center and not a full-service recreation center, it nicely complements the services we are already providing at Heritage Park Senior Facility with virtually no overlap,” said Mary Ellen Donner, director, City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.

The Downtown Senior Center will operate from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and will be closed on Sunday and city-observed holidays.

The City of Henderson owns the land on which the project was built and is leasing it to Nevada HAND for a term of 99 years. In turn, Nevada HAND is leasing a portion of the complex back to the City of Henderson for the same term for purposes of operating a senior center.
